Information sharing has begun between CommonWell Health Alliance members and organizations that have embraced the Carequality Interoperability Framework.
Carequality, which is run by The Sequoia Project, announced on its blog Thursday that it has “started a limited roll-out of live bidirectional data sharing with an initial set of CommonWell members and providers and other Carequality Interoperability Framework adopters.”
“This currently limited production use is the beginning of a broader effort to increase health IT connectivity nationwide by enabling CommonWell subscribers to engage in health data exchange through directed queries with Carequality-enabled providers, and vice versa,” wrote Sequoia Project Marketing Director Dawn Van Dyke.
CommonWell remains on track to make services generally available to subscribing members and participating providers and healthcare systems by the end of summer, Van Dyke said.
The CommonWell initial sites have shared 4,000 documents with other Carequality-enabled physicians to date, according to Van Dyke. “With the help of these initial sites, CommonWell will collaborate with Carequality participants to complete volume benchmarking, user experience validation, and process refinement,” she said.
Carequality and CommonWell announced their interoperability initiative in December 2016. In a joint statement at the time, the two organizations said by “leveraging health IT interoperability, providers can avoid adverse events such as allergic reactions or medication conflicts as well as duplicate procedures, potentially reducing time, costs, and unnecessary hospital admissions.”
CommonWell Health Alliance is a non-profit association of health IT companies working together to create universal access to health data nationwide. Members include major electronic health records vendors as well as providers of technology for post-acute care, imaging, perinatal, laboratory, retail pharmacy, oncology, population health, emergency services and more.
Carequality is a nationwide common interoperability framework enabling exchange between and among health data sharing networks. More than 15,000 hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare organizations have been actively deployed under the Carequality framework or CommonWell network, the groups said.
